Glen McMahon's Story
It is perhaps this statement that has helped Glen maintain such a positive attitude since being diagnosed with MS 14 years ago and why he has decided to become an MS Ambassador. Prior to Glen’s diagnosis, he was heavily involved in a number of sports including representative rugby league. He also ran his own plumbing business until eight years ago when his MS deteriorated and he acquired his wheelchair. However, Glen has been able to rekindle his passion for sport and literally got ‘on his bike’ when introduced to the sport of hand cycling. “I use a hand cycle specially designed for the disabled and I race against other disabled people.” Glen is constantly inspired and encouraged by his seven year-old daughter. “My daughter is so supportive and she is always smiling for me when I’m doing these things,” he says. Glen’s positive attitude is contagious, and his determination notable. “There is no reason why we cannot enjoy our life to the fullest, determination keeps the body fit.” Glen completed the Sydney to the Gong Bike Ride for MS in 2004 and says, “This MS of mine has to live with me; I don’t have to live with it.” With the support from his family, employer, doctors, nurses and Multiple Sclerosis NSW/VIC, Glen has been able to understand his MS and has “accepted it as a challenge” he said. Pushing himself in a wheelchair, 100 sit-ups a night and keeping a diary of both good and bad days are all personal motivators for Glen, helping him strengthen his mind and body. A regular visitor to the Studdy MS Centre in Lidcombe, NSW Glen says that his regular visits help keep his mind active and staff are very helpful with hints and advice. He is testament to the power of a positive attitude and believes that research into MS worldwide is progressing. “I live for the day when I can walk hand in hand with my daughter,” Glen says.
