Death of a Bookseller

This was the literary equivalent to watching a train wreck and not being able to take your eyes off it. While it’s premised as a mystery/thriller, it felt more like a character study of two deeply unlikeable, completely mentally unstable, traumatised and in need of serious therapy, traditional and non-traditional addicts that you just want to watch collide and explode. While I wouldn’t necessarily say I liked this book, after 60% (although that in itself is a point against it) I was invested in knowing what happened next to the point that I didn’t stop reading. If you are a fan of true crime then this story will definitely appeal to you, but it’s not a topic of interest for me so I was less invested than in just how much I ended up hating both protagonists and looking forward to their demise. Sadly the ending did not live up to my hopes and left me slightly baffled. Shallow secondary characters, overused phrasing (“normie” *shudder*), and a tired concept rounded off an average reading experience for me.
