Evocation

*sigh* I’m still chasing the exceptional high that was Gibson’s debut, A Dowry of Blood, and after the utter disappointment that was An Education in Malice earlier this year, I didn’t have high hopes for Evocation and sadly I was not surprised in the least. While it’s not necessarily a bad book, nothing really clicked for me. The characters are unlikeable until the very end, there was absolutely no tension to keep the reader invested, the pacing was off because it focused more on their messy situationship than the problem of the story, said problem was really a minor inconvenience as it was ‘solved’ in a single chapter, not to mention for a book called Evocation there sure wasn’t a whole lot of magic involved. Ultimately I think this tried to pack too much into what was already a flimsy plot and needed a serious edit (or rewrite). Dowry will still remain one of my all time favourites, but I won’t be continuing with this series and if this is indicative of what is to come it may be my last Gibson book period.
