Garden of Shadows

If you’ve read or seen the film adaptations of the ‘Flowers in the Attic’ quartet (aka the Dollanger series) or Disney’s’Saving Mr Banks’ you’ll enjoy the prequel by the same author. Both works convey Olivia Foxworth (nee Winfield) as the epitome of heartless and sadistic without an ounce of compassion in her body. This prequel explores Foxworth’s life pre-marriage, her journey into motherhood, becoming the matriarch of the Foxworth family and how her life events bring about her downfall. Without giving away the details, it had the surprising effect of making me feel both sympathy and empathy for Olivia Foxworth all the while seeing Malcolm Foxworth for the hypocritical depraved man in ways I never imagined.
