I really loved this book as it intrigued me and I have previously read the other books in the series. I have grown attached to the characters although many of them have mysterious pasts which this book explained in more detail. This book was a prequel and gave me a much needed understanding of the backstory of the protagonist, Celaena Sardothien, and taught me more about some of the characters only hinted at in the series. Celaena’s training to become an assassin, her previous love life and some of the atrocities that she has experienced are explained and really give a greater meaning to the ways that she acts to some of the characters in the series. Another thing that I found interesting was that in the last book of the series, which I read just before this one, they were fighting in a war and someone who was an old friend of Celaena’s backed them up and helped them win. This character and Celaena’s story with her explained some of Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas, the last book of the series. Overall, I loved this book and would even read it again. It captivated me and I laughed, cried and stressed with the protagonist as she endured her personal hardships. I would rate this 5 stars. Show more Show less
