The Vigilante

Okay so, I have no prior experience with John Steinbeck’s work to hold this up against, but from what I can understand, his works were meant to create a stir, to induce conversations that could build into debate or deep thought processes. So, I did take this in mind when reading these stories. However…I just found these really hard to like. Maybe I’ll be shot down for saying so, but they felt very unfinished, and lacking in, just…something. This book contains 3 stories — “The Vigilante”, “The Snake”, and “The Chrysanthemums”. Each is supposed to show some sort of deep message. But they just puzzled me. I could see what he was trying to say, or whatever, but these were just…strange. I don’t really know how else to put it. Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. I’ll read some of this novels — perhaps short stories like this just don’t appeal to me, who knows.
