15-Year-old Hanna Mendel’s life is changed forever, when she and her beloved family are herded up and taken to Auschwitz. Their only crime was that they were Jewish. All her hopes and dreams of becoming a concert pianist are lost as she and her sister battle the everyday traumas of living in the camp. Chosen by the camp commandant to play the piano every day at his home, her life improves slightly as she is shown empathy by some of the Jewish staff and is given a warm coat to wear as well as precious scraps of food. She forms a secret and forbidden friendship with the commandant’s son Karl. In May 1945 when Germany surrendered, Hanna was released from ‘her prison.’ However, although she was reunited with her sister Erika, she never saw her parents again and could only image what happened to them. She never saw Karl again either, but heard he had been captured and interred into a camp, his only crime that he was the son of the camp commandant, who escaped overseas.
