Set predominantly in the 1980's,it is told from the perspective of the grandchildren in the book. One child lives in Czechoslovakia with his Babi (grandmother) and the other child lives in Melbourne with hers. The two grandmothers are twins, separated by war.
It addresses the impact WWII had on the Czech Republic, and the ongoing impact it had on the individual lives of the people. Without explicitly telling you so, it makes you feel like life is still worth living, despite the horrible things that happen, because there is still love.
It was very beautifully written and reminded me so much of my own grandparents (who also arrived in Australia fleeing war).
