Things You Save In a Fire

Cassie Hanwell is not your average female. She is a badass firefighter who beats most men in things like pullups and basketball. She has her dream job in Texas with a bunch of calendar-worthy firemen, outranking most since she is also a paramedic, not just an EMT. Due to a very unfortunate incident at an awards ceremony where she got an award, Cassie was told to either apologise to an important politician or be fired.

Cassie’s estranged mom reached out in the meantime to ask for her help. She is ailing and needs help around the house. IS this maybe an answer to her problems? Instead of getting fired, maybe she can transfer to the small rural town her mom lives in. Upending her whole life, Cassie moves in with her mother, ready to start working again.

The new fire station is not what she is used to. Blatantly sexist, out-of-date, with faulty equipment and just one bathroom, Cassie tries to keep her head down and do her job. The only one at the station to give her the time of day is the very handsome Rookie. She is not one to fall in love, so why can’t she stop thinking about him? Flying under the radar doesn’t include dating your co-worker, but maybe standing out can be a good thing in this small backwards town, right? What can go wrong?

My thoughts: I loved The Bodyguard by the same author, but this one was not for me. I’m a paramedic myself and reading this made me cringe. Is the USA so backwards when it comes to females? I mean, at one job I was one of three females between 90 men, and it wasn’t this bad (only sometimes). And the Rookie – no chemistry there at all! I wanted to read a love story, not about a perfect tomboy who can beat men at everything. We don’t have to beat men to be noticed or respected, but that’s what the books and TV tell us. I hate this whole thing where women are supposed to do everything better than men. Ugh, this book just made me mad.
