Reading for a great cause
My name is Heather and 2026 marks the eleventh MS Readathon that I’ve participated in. I learned about this fundraising event when I was in upper high school and decided to combine my love of reading with raising money for a great cause. The MS Readathon became an annual event for me over the next four years. In 2020, I resumed participating in this annual event after an 11 year hiatus. It has once again become an annual event for me.
One of the reasons that I fundraise for the MS Readathon specifically is because unlike cancer (whether specific ones like breast cancer or cancer in general), there are fewer charities who provide support services to the 33, 000 people in Australia who have Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions. These people and their families are equally as deserving of our support to help them cope with their condition(s) and give them some dignity.
In 2026, my goal is to raise $500 to help fund helplines and provision of appointments with MS nurses who aide patients in managing their condition(s) and treating the symptoms. Additionally, these funds go towards running information sessions for the families of people with MS and/or other neurological conditions (epilepsy, MND, etc) including how to navigate the NDIS to secure financial support and other assistance. My fundraising goal is subject to change, however, depending on how soon I can raise the funds; in 2024, my initial goal was $500 and I surprised myself by personally raising $880.29.
The goal is to read 10 books. Apart from fundraising for a great cause, I also like to use this chance to have a digital detox and discover new book titles that I wouldn’t otherwise read.
